Sweden 5–1 Tunisia: Gyokeres, Isak and Ayari Announce Scandinavians as Genuine Dark Horses

Alexander Isak, Viktor Gyokeres, Hamza Ayari (twice) and Mattias Svanberg put on a ruthless attacking display as Sweden demolished Tunisia 5–1 in a one-sided Group D opener.

Anybody watching Sweden's opening World Cup 2026 performance wondering whether this is a side capable of a deep tournament run received their answer comprehensively. Five goals, a relentless attacking display, and a final scoreline of 5–1 against Tunisia that flattered the Africans slightly — this was a statement as emphatic as any made in the opening days of the tournament.

Sweden had the quality to do this. The question was whether they would do it consistently, against the pressure and heightened stakes of a World Cup. In Group D's first match, the answer was an unambiguous yes.

Ayari Opens and Doubles the Lead

Hamza Ayari — the Swedish midfielder of Tunisian heritage who chose to represent Sweden and has become one of the most dynamic box-to-box players in Allsvenskan — opened the scoring in the 23rd minute with a goal that showcased exactly the qualities that make him so effective. Driving forward from midfield into the space between Tunisia's defensive and midfield lines, he exchanged a one-two with Viktor Gyokeres and slotted the ball into the bottom corner with his right foot.

Alexander Isak doubled the lead in the 34th minute. The Newcastle forward — one of the most technically refined strikers in European football — controlled a driven cross with a first touch of exceptional quality, then with his second touch placed the ball into the far corner with his weaker left foot. Tunisia's goalkeeper had no chance.

Gyokeres Adds the Third

Viktor Gyokeres, the Sporting CP striker who spent much of the club season breaking goalscoring records, completed the scoring for the first half in spirit if not technically — his 51st-minute goal arriving after a sequence of sustained pressure that left Tunisia's defence overwhelmed. Gyokeres received the ball with his back to goal, shrugged off a challenge with his physical strength, and finished emphatically with his right foot.

At 3–0, the match was finished as a competitive contest.

Ayari's Brace and Tunisia's Consolation

Ayari completed his brace in the 67th minute — another goal that came from intelligent movement and clinical finishing, capping one of the individual performances of the tournament's opening week. Mattias Svanberg added the fifth in the 78th minute with a curled effort that flew into the top corner, his first international goal for Sweden.

Montassar Rekik pulled one back for Tunisia in the 82nd minute with a composed finish that gave the scoreline a slightly more respectable look. The goal was greeted warmly by neutrals — Tunisia had competed without disgrace after the match turned against them, and a goal was the least their effort deserved.

Sweden's Warning to the Tournament

Sweden finished fourth at the 1994 World Cup — the last time the tournament was held in North America. Those who follow Swedish football closely believe that a squad featuring Isak and Gyokeres as a strike partnership, with Ayari providing dynamism from midfield, represents perhaps the strongest attacking combination Sweden has produced since that generation.

On this evidence, any team drawn against Sweden in the knockout rounds will have reason to be concerned. Group D continues, but the statement has been made.
