About FIFA World Cup 2026

The FIFA World Cup 2026 is the 23rd edition of the tournament and the first to feature 48 teams, up from 32 at previous editions. Hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, it is the largest World Cup in history — 104 matches across 16 venues spread across an entire continent. The tournament runs from June 11 to July 19, 2026, with the final held at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

The expanded 48-team format fundamentally changes how the tournament is structured. Instead of 8 groups of 4, there are now 12 groups of 4. The top two teams from each group advance automatically (24 teams), and the 8 best third-placed teams across all 12 groups also qualify for the knockout stage, bringing the total to 32 teams. This means there is a brand-new Round of 32 before the traditional Round of 16 — adding extra matches and extra drama for the nations that qualify. Every team is guaranteed at least three group-stage matches, giving newer football nations more time on the world stage.

The three co-hosts each bring different footballing cultures to the tournament. The United States — hosting their largest ever sporting event — spread matches across iconic NFL stadiums in New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, Miami, San Francisco, Kansas City, Boston, Philadelphia, and Atlanta. Mexico brings the incomparable atmosphere of Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, one of the most historic football venues on earth, as well as Estadio BBVA in Monterrey and Estadio Akron in Guadalajara. Canada contributes BC Place in Vancouver and BMO Field in Toronto — a country whose growing football culture received an enormous boost when they qualified for Qatar 2022 after a 36-year absence.

For Arab football, World Cup 2026 is a landmark moment. Eight Arab nations have qualified: Morocco, who reached the semi-finals at Qatar 2022 and arrive as genuine contenders to go deep again; Saudi Arabia, who stunned Argentina at Qatar 2022 and bring renewed confidence; Egypt, returning to the World Cup for the first time since 2018; Algeria, led by Riyad Mahrez and back at the finals for the first time since 2014; Tunisia, making their seventh World Cup appearance; Qatar, at a second consecutive finals after hosting in 2022; Iraq, back at the World Cup for the first time since 1986; and Jordan, making their historic debut at the global stage for the very first time. The Arab presence at World Cup 2026 is the strongest in history, reflecting the rapid growth and investment in football across the region.

The title favourites heading into the tournament include France — defending champions and finalists in 2022 — with Kylian Mbappé leading their attack. Brazil return desperate to end a 24-year wait for a sixth World Cup, while England, Argentina, Germany, Spain, and Portugal all arrive with squads capable of going the distance.
