SwedenMaeda and Elanga Trade Goals as Japan and Sweden Share the Spoils
Daizen Maeda put Japan ahead before Anthony Elanga levelled for Sweden in a finely balanced 1–1 draw in Arlington.
Japan and Sweden produced a tight, finely balanced contest at AT&T Stadium that ultimately ended as it perhaps deserved to — all square, with little to separate two well-matched sides.
It was Japan who broke the deadlock midway through the second half. Daizen Maeda, tireless as ever in the Japanese front line, struck in the 56th minute to reward his side's patient, pressing approach and send the travelling support into celebration.
Their lead, though, lasted only six minutes. Anthony Elanga, Sweden's most dangerous outlet with his pace in transition, levelled in the 62nd minute to restore parity and swing the momentum back toward the Scandinavians. From there the game settled into a cagey, attritional rhythm, both sides wary of over-committing.
For Japan, it is a result that reflects their evolution into one of the most respected sides outside the traditional powers — technically sharp, tactically disciplined, and difficult to beat. A point against well-organised opposition keeps their campaign ticking along.
For Sweden, the equaliser will feel like a point earned rather than two dropped. Elanga's pace gives them a route to goal against almost anyone, and their resilience in responding so quickly to falling behind speaks well of their temperament.
With the group finely poised, both sides will feel they remain in control of their own destiny as the tournament moves toward the knockout rounds.
