SwedenFrance 3–0 Sweden: Mbappé Double Powers the Champions Into the Round of 16
Kylian Mbappé scored either side of Bradley Barcola's strike as France dismissed Sweden 3–0 in a ruthlessly efficient Round of 32 performance.
France do not do drama in the early knockout rounds — they do demolition. The defending champions swept Sweden aside 3–0 in the Round of 32, with Kylian Mbappé scoring twice in a performance that served notice to every remaining contender.
The timing of the opener was cruel on Sweden. Having survived wave after wave of French pressure, they conceded on the stroke of half-time: Ousmane Dembélé — the group stage's hat-trick hero against Norway — slipped the pass, and Mbappé finished with trademark certainty. A goal on 45 minutes changes a dressing room, and Sweden never truly recovered.
Barcola Kills It
Eight minutes after the restart the contest was over as a contest. Michael Olise, outstanding all evening, created for Bradley Barcola to make it 2–0, and France eased into the gear where they simply keep the ball and let opponents chase shadows.
Mbappé's second, in the 74th minute, was again an Olise creation — the winger's second assist of the night crowning a display that has forced his way into the conversation about the tournament's best players. From there France managed the game to full time without allowing Sweden a meaningful response.
Sweden, group-stage conquerors of Tunisia and one of the surprise packages of June, simply ran into a machine. France's reward is a Round of 16 meeting with Paraguay — Germany's conquerors — on July 4, and on this evidence the champions will take some stopping.
