Yoane Wissa Double Caps Congo DR Comeback Against Uzbekistan
Eldor Shomurodov gave Uzbekistan an early lead, but Yoane Wissa scored twice and Fiston Mayele struck as Congo DR fought back to win 3–1 in Atlanta.
Congo DR produced a spirited second-half comeback at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, overturning an early deficit to defeat Uzbekistan 3–1 and end their group campaign on a high.
The start could hardly have been worse for the Congolese. Eldor Shomurodov, Uzbekistan's most dangerous forward, struck in the 10th minute to give his side an early lead and silence the Congo DR support. For much of the first half, Uzbekistan looked comfortable in protecting their advantage.
The second period, however, belonged to Congo DR. Yoane Wissa levelled from the penalty spot in the 68th minute, a goal that transformed the momentum of the contest. Ten minutes later they were ahead, Fiston Mayele finishing in the 78th minute to complete the turnaround and send the Congolese into raptures.
Wissa then put the result beyond doubt, adding his second of the night deep into stoppage time to seal a 3–1 victory and cap an excellent individual display. From a goal down, Congo DR had scored three without reply to claim a deserved win.
For Congo DR, it is a result built on resilience and second-half quality — exactly the character a side needs to thrive at this level. Wissa's double will rightly take the headlines.
For Uzbekistan, there is disappointment at surrendering a lead, but their early endeavour offered glimpses of the promise that carried them to the tournament. The fine margins, on this occasion, fell against them.
