ColombiaLuis Díaz Inspires Colombia to 3–1 Win Over Uzbekistan
Luis Díaz produced a moment of magic and Colombia pulled clear late on to beat a spirited Uzbekistan 3–1 at the Estadio Azteca, getting their World Cup 2026 campaign up and running.
Colombia got their World Cup 2026 campaign moving with a 3–1 win over a stubborn Uzbekistan at the iconic Estadio Azteca, but the South Americans were made to work hard for it by a tournament debutant that refused to be overawed.
Colombia Strike First
Daniel Muñoz gave Colombia the lead in the 40th minute, the marauding full-back arriving at the right moment to reward his side's early control. Colombia, blessed with pace and creativity in the final third, looked comfortable as the teams went in at the break with the South Americans ahead.
But Uzbekistan, playing in their first-ever World Cup, had other ideas.
Uzbekistan Hit Back
Fayzullaev levelled in the 60th minute, a deserved equaliser that capped a brave Uzbek response and stunned the Azteca crowd. For a quarter of an hour, the debutants believed they could claim a famous point against one of South America's most talented sides.
Then Colombia found another gear — and their star man delivered.
Luis Díaz Settles It
Luis Díaz restored Colombia's lead in the 65th minute, the kind of decisive contribution expected of one of the most dangerous wingers in world football. From there, Colombia managed the game with growing assurance, and Campaz wrapped up the win deep into stoppage time (90+9) to make the final score 3–1.
What It Means
Colombia move up the Group K standings with a hard-earned three points and the reassurance that, even on an off-day, they have match-winners capable of settling tight games. Díaz's quality, in particular, will give them belief that they can trouble anyone in the knockout rounds.
Uzbekistan can be proud of their World Cup debut performance. Going toe-to-toe with Colombia and leading the game level into the hour mark shows they belong on this stage. With more clinical finishing, results will follow.
