Colombia made it two wins from two at World Cup 2026 with a patient 1–0 victory over a stubborn Congo DR at Estadio Akron in Guadalajara, Daniel Muñoz's late goal settling a tight contest and sending the South Americans top of Group K.

This was a test of nerve as much as quality. For long periods Congo DR frustrated Colombia with a disciplined, compact display, defending their box in numbers and refusing to be drawn out of shape. Colombia enjoyed the lion's share of possession but found the final third congested, the breakthrough proving elusive deep into the second half as the tension built around the stadium.

Muñoz Breaks the Deadlock

The decisive moment came on 76 minutes. Muñoz timed his run to perfection to meet Juan Fernando Quintero's pass and finished to break Congolese resistance, sparking relief and celebration among the Colombian support who had begun to fear a frustrating afternoon.

Congo DR pushed forward in the closing stages in search of an equaliser but could not breach a Colombian defence that has now kept two clean sheets in two games — an underrated strength in a side better known for its attacking flair.

A Balanced Dark Horse

That defensive solidity, allied to the creativity of Quintero and the energy of Muñoz from full-back, is exactly why Colombia are being talked about as genuine dark horses. Winning when not at their best is the mark of a tournament team, and a maximum six points with two clean sheets is a near-ideal start.

Group K Picture

Victory gives Colombia a perfect six points and top spot in Group K, two clear of second-placed Portugal. Congo DR drop to a single point and face an uphill battle to reach the knockout rounds heading into the final round of fixtures.
