Bosnia & HerzegovinaUSA 2–0 Bosnia & Herzegovina: Ten-Man Hosts Reach the Round of 16 on Balogun's Night of Extremes
Folarin Balogun scored on the stroke of half-time and was sent off in the 64th — but ten-man USA dug in and Malik Tillman sealed a 2–0 win late on.
Folarin Balogun experienced an entire career in nineteen minutes. The USA striker scored on the stroke of half-time, was sent off for a serious foul in the 64th, and then watched from the dressing room as his ten-man team-mates closed out a 2–0 win over Bosnia & Herzegovina that puts the co-hosts into the Round of 16.
The hosts had controlled the first half without cutting Bosnia open, until Balogun struck in the 45th minute to send the crowd into half-time in full voice. Bosnia responded with a triple substitution at the break — the veteran Edin Džeko among those introduced — and the game tilted into a far more even contest.
The Red Card
Then came the flashpoint. In the 64th minute Balogun, chasing a lost cause, lunged in and was shown a straight red card. Suddenly the USA faced half an hour with ten men, a rocking stadium gone quiet, and a Bosnian side scenting the biggest result of their tournament.
What followed was the most mature performance of the American summer. The ten men compressed the pitch, defended their box with discipline, and struck on the counter: in the 82nd minute Malik Tillman finished the move that killed the tie, 2–0, and turned the final minutes into a celebration.
Bosnia — group-stage victors over Qatar and within a whisker of more against Canada and Switzerland — exit at the first knockout hurdle, undone by a team that refused to let a red card become a crisis. The USA march on to meet Belgium in the Round of 16 on July 7, though they will do so without their suspended striker — the hero-villain of an unforgettable night.
