AustraliaUSA 2–0 Australia: Burgess Own Goal and Freeman Seal Hosts' Place in the Knockouts
An early own goal and a first-half Freeman strike gave the United States a 2–0 win over Australia in Seattle, sealing the co-hosts' place in the Round of 32 with a game to spare.
The United States made it two wins from two at World Cup 2026, beating Australia 2–0 at a raucous Lumen Field in Seattle to secure their place in the Round of 32 with a group game to spare. It was not always pretty, but on the back of their opening rout of Paraguay, the co-hosts now have maximum points and momentum.
The opening goal, in the 11th minute, owed something to fortune. Under pressure from a pressing American attack, Australia defender Cameron Burgess could only turn the ball into his own net, and the United States had the early lead their bright start merited.
A Fortunate Opener, a Deserved Second
If the first goal was scrappy, the second was not. Two minutes before the interval, Freeman found space and finished confidently to double the advantage, sending the United States in 2–0 up at the break and in complete control.
Australia, who had beaten Türkiye in their opener, grew increasingly frustrated, Bos and Circati both booked in the first half as the Socceroos struggled to contain the hosts' movement and pace.
A Card-Strewn Second Half
The second half descended into a niggly, stop-start affair — Robinson, Balogun and Richards into the book for the USA, Souttar and Italiano for Australia — but as a spectacle the contest had long been settled. The United States saw it out with the assurance of a team that knows its destiny is in its own hands.
Group D Picture
Six points from two matches puts the United States top of Group D and into the knockout rounds, a dream start for the co-hosts in front of their own supporters. Australia, on three points, remain in the hunt for a qualifying place heading into the final round.
