Cape Verde IslandsSpain 0–0 Cape Verde Islands — World Cup 2026 Group H Match Report
One of World Cup 2026's biggest shocks: Cape Verde Islands held Spain to a goalless draw at the Rose Bowl. Goalkeeper Josimar Dias was the hero as the Blue Sharks produced a defensive masterclass.
One of the most extraordinary results of World Cup 2026 arrived at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena: Spain, three-time European champions and one of the genuine pre-tournament favourites, were held to a goalless draw by Cape Verde Islands — an Atlantic archipelago nation of just 600,000 people. It is the kind of result that makes the expanded 48-team World Cup worth every second.
Spain came into this match with a squad full of La Liga and Champions League winners. Pedri and Gavi controlled the tempo from midfield with a passing rhythm that few teams in world football can match. Lamine Yamal — already one of the most celebrated young players in the game — started on the right flank. Álvaro Morata led the line. On paper, Group H was Spain's to control from the first match. On the grass of the Rose Bowl, the game played out very differently.
Cape Verde — known as the Blue Sharks — are a team built on pace, collective organisation, and an extraordinary ability to make themselves very hard to play against. Their manager deployed a disciplined deep 4–4–2 defensive block that denied Spain the central space where Pedri and Gavi are most dangerous. When Spain tried to play through the structure, Cape Verde's forwards pressed the receiving player immediately, forcing backwards passes and frustrating the build-up.
For the first 20 minutes, Spain's quality was clear: 72 per cent possession, quick movement, half-chances. But they struggled to find the decisive final pass. In Cape Verde's goalkeeper Josimar Dias, they had a man who was equal to everything Spain asked of him throughout the evening.
Morata had Spain's best chance in the 38th minute: a low Yamal cross found him at the near post, and his first-time finish was beaten away by Dias. Pedri's curling effort from 22 metres in the 61st minute hit the outside of the post. Gavi's shot on the turn in the 74th minute was tipped wide brilliantly by Dias. Spain introduced fresh attackers from the bench in increasing desperation. None could find the breakthrough.
Cape Verde held on for one of the greatest results in their international history — and arguably one of the biggest shocks of any World Cup in the modern era. Spain now face pressure in Group H. For the Blue Sharks, this is a moment to be celebrated by an entire nation.
