BrazilMorocco Hold Brazil to Stunning 1–1 Draw in World Cup 2026 Group C Opener
Ismael Saibari put Morocco ahead before Vinícius Júnior equalised for the five-time world champions. A brilliant point that confirms Morocco as genuine World Cup 2026 contenders.
In front of 80,663 fans at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, Morocco delivered one of the defining statements of World Cup 2026's opening week. The Atlas Lions held five-time world champions Brazil to a 1–1 draw in a Group C thriller that announced their intentions loudly: this Morocco side are not here to make up the numbers.
It was Morocco who struck first. Ismael Saibari put the Atlas Lions ahead in the 21st minute with a goal of supreme composure. A perfectly timed through ball split the Brazilian centre-backs, and Saibari kept his nerve to chip the ball cleanly over Alisson Becker with his first touch. The 80,000-strong crowd held its breath — and then erupted.
Morocco's Defensive Masterclass
For the first half-hour, Morocco were the better team by some distance. The defensive structure that made them so formidable at Qatar 2022 — where they conceded just one goal in six matches — was on display from the first whistle. Sofyan Amrabat patrolled midfield with authority, breaking up Brazil's attempts to build from the back and recycling possession to the wide players. Brazil's technical players, accustomed to finding space at will in club football, struggled to unpick the disciplined Moroccan block.
Walid Regragui had set his team up to absorb pressure and threaten on the counter, and it worked. Every time Achraf Hakimi received the ball on the right, there was menace. Every time Hakim Ziyech dropped deep to get on the ball, Morocco moved forward with purpose.
Brazil Hit Back Through Vinicius
The equaliser arrived in the 32nd minute, and it was the kind of moment that only a player of Vinícius Júnior's quality can produce. Exchanging passes with Bruno Guimarães on the left flank, Vinicius took two touches to create space in a tight area and rifled a right-footed shot past the outstretched arm of Yassine Bounou. It was a goal of individual brilliance — the calling card of Carlo Ancelotti's Brazil.
The second half settled into a more measured pattern. Brazil applied persistent pressure but found Morocco's defensive block impossible to break down cleanly. Morocco, for their part, remained dangerous on the counter and created two clear opportunities to retake the lead. Neither side could find the decisive moment, and at full time, both teams left with a point.
What This Draw Means for Arab Football
For Morocco, this is a result of enormous significance. Holding Brazil — five-time world champions, a squad of global superstars — to a draw in their opening match is not luck. It is the product of a world-class defensive system, a team with iron collective discipline, and forwards capable of punishing any opponent.
Saibari's composed finish, taken under maximum pressure in a packed stadium against one of the great goalkeepers in the world, showed that Morocco can produce at the very highest level. Their Group C continues — Croatia and Belgium await — but on this evidence, the Atlas Lions will fear nobody.
