CuraçaoGermany 7–1 Curaçao: A Historic World Cup Debut for the Smallest Nation in the Tournament
Germany ran up their biggest World Cup win in years, but the real story was Curaçao — the smallest nation ever to compete at a FIFA World Cup — and their historic goal in a 7–1 defeat.
When Livano Comenencia struck his 15-metre effort into the net in the 21st minute at NRG Stadium in Houston, the stadium produced something unexpected — its loudest cheer of the night. Not for Germany. For Curaçao.
The smallest nation ever to qualify for a FIFA World Cup, with a population of around 150,000 and a land area of just 444 square kilometres, had scored on their debut. Germany were already 2–0 up and would go on to win 7–1. It did not matter. In that moment, the scoreline was irrelevant. History was being made.
Germany's Ruthless Start
Germany set about their task with clinical efficiency from the first whistle. Felix Nmecha struck after just six minutes — the fastest goal of the entire World Cup 2026 to that point — to give Germany an early grip on Group E. The goal was quintessentially German: quick combination play through midfield, a sharp overlap, a precise finish. Within the first quarter-hour it was already clear that the night was going to be a long one for Curaçao's manager, Dick Advocaat.
Advocaat, at 78, is the oldest coach in World Cup history. He had prepared his team as well as any coach could have for a game against one of the pre-tournament favourites, but Germany's quality was simply overwhelming from the outset.
The Moment the Stadium Stood Up
Then, in the 21st minute, Curaçao silenced the analysis and gave their supporters a moment they will never forget. Comenencia's shot, struck with conviction from outside the penalty area, flew into the net. The 68,000-strong crowd — many of them neutral football lovers and a sizeable contingent of diaspora Curaçaoan supporters — gave the goal a reception that matched any of Germany's seven.
Germany quickly restored their dominance. Nico Schlotterbeck headed home at 38 minutes, Kai Havertz converted a penalty before half-time, and the second period became a showcase for German attacking talent. Jamal Musiala — arguably the most gifted young player in the world right now — scored twice with his trademark dribbling and composure. Nathaniel Brown and Deniz Undav added further goals to complete the rout.
Neuer's Record and Nagelsmann's Verdict
In goal for Germany, Manuel Neuer made his own piece of history. At 40 years old, the Bayern Munich captain became the oldest player ever to represent Germany at a major tournament, overtaking the record previously held by Lothar Matthäus. For a goalkeeper who has defined world football's number one position for over a decade, it was a fitting milestone.
After the match, Germany's coach Julian Nagelsmann was measured in his satisfaction. "I'm very satisfied with us scoring seven goals and our performance for the most part," he said. "A winning start is always important, and we're glad we managed it." He was also generous towards Curaçao, saying he was "curious" to see how they would fare in the remaining group games.
Curaçao's Spirit
Advocaat, for his part, accepted the defeat with dignity and pride. "We expected to do more against Germany, but they were too strong," he said. "Despite this 7–1 outcome, the joy of the fans is fantastic. This is not a disgrace; we can still be proud. We still have two games to go, and those could end differently."
That spirit — a small island nation competing on the biggest stage in football, scoring a goal in their first-ever World Cup match, and refusing to treat the experience as anything other than a celebration — is precisely what the expanded 48-team World Cup was designed to make possible.
