Ivory CoastUndav Double Rescues Germany in 2–1 Comeback Over Ivory Coast
Franck Kessié gave Ivory Coast a shock lead, but substitute hero Deniz Undav struck twice — including a 90th-minute winner — as Germany came from behind to beat the African champions 2–1.
Germany were made to work for it. The four-time world champions trailed the reigning African champions Ivory Coast for over an hour before Deniz Undav's late double rescued a dramatic 2–1 victory — a result that flattered Germany but spoke to their resilience and quality from the bench.
Kessié Stuns Germany
Ivory Coast, fearless and well-organised, took a deserved lead in the 30th minute. The vastly experienced Franck Kessié arrived at the right moment to finish and send a jolt through the German ranks. The Elephants defended their advantage superbly, frustrating Germany's build-up and threatening on the counter.
As the second half wore on with Ivory Coast still ahead, the pressure on Germany grew. They needed a moment of inspiration.
Undav to the Rescue
It came through Deniz Undav. In the 68th minute, the forward equalised after good work from Nadiem Amiri, finally breaking the Ivorian resistance and shifting the momentum decisively in Germany's favour.
The drama was saved for the very end. In the 90th minute, Undav struck again — this time set up by Felix Nmecha — to complete the turnaround and spark wild celebrations among the German players and supporters.
What It Means
For Germany, it was an escape as much as a victory, but champions find a way, and the strength of their squad proved decisive. Undav's impact will give the coaching staff plenty to think about.
For Ivory Coast, it was agonising. For 68 minutes they were the better side, and they will rue not extending their lead. But this performance proved the African champions belong on this stage.
