NorwayIvory Coast 1–2 Norway: Haaland Sends Norway Into the Round of 16
Antonio Nusa opened the scoring, super-sub Amad Diallo levelled for Ivory Coast, but Erling Haaland struck four minutes from time to put Norway through.
Norway are into the knockout deep end of a World Cup for the first time in their history, and — inevitably — it was Erling Haaland who took them there, striking four minutes from time to beat a spirited Ivory Coast 2–1 in the Round of 32.
The opener was a glimpse of Norway's future as much as their present. Martin Ødegaard, orchestrating everything from midfield, released Antonio Nusa in the 39th minute, and the young winger finished coolly to give the Scandinavians a deserved half-time lead.
Diallo Changes the Game
Ivory Coast's response came from the bench. Amad Diallo, introduced on the hour, needed fourteen minutes to make his mark — meeting Nicolas Pépé's pass and finishing sharply in the 74th minute to level the contest and swing the momentum decisively toward the African champions-elect of this tournament's neutral hearts. For a quarter of an hour, an upset felt genuinely on.
Haaland Answers
But great strikers need only one moment, and in the 86th minute Patrick Berg found Haaland in the box. The outcome was never in doubt. One touch, one finish, and Norway — beaten heavily by France in the group stage but ruthless ever since — were through.
Norway now meet Brazil in the Round of 16 on July 5, a heavyweight collision between the tournament's most feared striker and its most decorated nation. Ivory Coast exit with heads high after topping their group ahead of Germany and pushing Norway to the final minutes here — African football's standard remains formidably high.
