Ousmane Dembélé scored a stunning first-half hat-trick as France swept aside Norway 4–1 in Boston, with Désiré Doué adding a late fourth.

France served notice of their title credentials with a devastating attacking display at Gillette Stadium in Boston, and at the heart of it was Ousmane Dembélé, who tore Norway apart with a sensational first-half hat-trick in a 4–1 victory.

It took Dembélé only seven minutes to open the scoring, racing onto a through ball and finishing with the composure of a forward in the form of his life. By the 20th minute he had his second, once again exploiting the space behind the Norwegian defence with the blend of pace and precision that has made him one of the most feared attackers in world football. France were rampant, and Norway were reeling.

To their credit, the Norwegians refused to simply fold. Thelo Aasgaard pulled one back in the 21st minute, a goal that arrived almost immediately after France's second and offered a flicker of hope that they might yet drag themselves back into the contest. For a brief moment, Gillette Stadium sensed a game.

That hope lasted barely ten minutes. Dembélé completed his hat-trick in the 32nd minute, a third goal that effectively settled the match before half-time and underlined the frightening depth of France's attacking riches. Three goals for one man inside half an hour was a statement not only of individual brilliance but of a team operating at a level few others can reach.

The second half became an exercise in game management. With the result beyond doubt, France eased off the accelerator, controlling possession and tempo with the unhurried assurance of genuine contenders while conserving energy for the battles ahead. Norway, for all their endeavour, found no route back.

There was still time for France to add gloss. Désiré Doué, one of the brightest of a remarkable crop of young French talents, finished deep into stoppage time to make it 4–1 and round off a thoroughly professional evening's work.

For France, this was as emphatic a statement as any made in the group stage. With Dembélé in this kind of devastating form, Doué impressing in support, and quality spread across every line, they look every inch a team built to go all the way.

For Norway, it is a chastening lesson in the ruthlessness of the very best. They competed in flashes and will take their goal as a small consolation, but they were ultimately overwhelmed by a speed and clinical edge they could not hope to live with. The gap between the genuine contenders and the rest was laid bare in Boston.
