Congo DRWissa’s Late Equaliser Earns Congo DR a Point Against Portugal
João Neves struck early for Portugal, but Congo DR levelled through Yoane Wissa on the stroke of half-time to earn a deserved 1–1 draw in a competitive World Cup 2026 Group K opener in Houston.
Portugal were held to a 1–1 draw by a determined Congo DR at NRG Stadium in Houston, as the African side showed exactly why they should not be underestimated at World Cup 2026. Yoane Wissa's equaliser on the stroke of half-time cancelled out João Neves's early opener and earned Congo DR a hugely valuable point.
A Lightning Start for Portugal
Portugal could hardly have asked for a better beginning. João Neves struck in just the 6th minute, the midfielder finishing off a slick early move to settle the favourites and quieten any nerves. With one of the most talented squads in the tournament, Portugal looked set to push on and control proceedings.
But Congo DR had not come to Houston to make up the numbers.
Congo DR Grow Into the Game
The African side weathered the early Portuguese pressure and gradually worked their way back into the contest. Their reward came at the perfect moment: Yoane Wissa levelled deep in first-half stoppage time (45+5), a goal that sent Congo DR in at the break on equal terms and visibly shook Portugal.
The second half was a more even, cagey affair. Portugal probed for a winner with their array of attacking talent, but Congo DR defended with discipline and organisation, restricting their illustrious opponents to half-chances and refusing to be broken down.
What It Means
For Congo DR, a point against one of the pre-tournament dark horses is an outstanding result and a statement of intent in Group K. Their resilience, particularly the timing of their equaliser, will give them belief that they can compete with anyone.
Portugal, by contrast, will be frustrated. Dropping two points in their opener puts early pressure on their remaining group fixtures, and they will need to be far more clinical to make the most of their considerable attacking quality. A fast start counts for little if you cannot see the game out.
