Panama 0–1 Croatia: Budimir Strike Revives Croatian Hopes in Toronto

Ante Budimir's second-half goal gave Croatia a hard-fought 1–0 win over Panama at BMO Field, breathing life into their World Cup campaign after a slow start.

Croatia kept their World Cup hopes alive with a hard-earned 1–0 victory over Panama at BMO Field in Toronto, Ante Budimir's second-half strike proving the difference in a tight, attritional contest the 2022 semi-finalists simply had to win.

After a slow start to their campaign, Croatia arrived under real pressure, and Panama were determined to make them suffer for it. The first half was a cagey affair, chances at a premium as the Central Americans defended in numbers, dropped into a deep block and dared their more illustrious opponents to find a way through. Croatia, marshalled as ever by their experienced midfield, kept the ball and waited for the gaps to appear.

Budimir Settles It

The breakthrough finally arrived on 54 minutes. Budimir got on the end of Josip Stanišić's delivery to finish from close range and settle Croatian nerves — a moment of quality and composure that a patient, probing side had been building towards all evening.

Panama refused to fold and pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages, sensing that one moment could rescue a point and breathe life into their own campaign. But they could not find a way past a Croatia side that defended its lead with the streetwise know-how of a team that has been here many times before, seeing out the win and the three priceless points that came with it.

Still in the Hunt

For Croatia, it is less a performance to savour than a result to build on — the kind of grind-it-out victory that keeps a tournament alive when the football has not yet clicked. Their golden generation knows that momentum in a World Cup is often found rather than forced, and a clean sheet and three points is a platform.

Group L Picture

Victory lifts Croatia to three points and back into contention in Group L, where England and Ghana lead the way on four. Panama, beaten and still without a point, are left facing elimination heading into the final round of fixtures.
