Late Vlašić Winner Sees Croatia Edge Past Ghana
Petar Sučić opened the scoring and Nikola Vlašić struck late to restore Croatia’s lead after a Ghana equaliser, sealing a 2–1 win in Philadelphia.
Croatia showed their experience and resilience at Lincoln Financial Field, recovering from the disappointment of a second-half equaliser to defeat Ghana 2–1 and underline their pedigree as one of the tournament's most battle-hardened sides.
Petar Sučić gave Croatia the lead in the 31st minute, a deserved reward for a side that controlled much of the opening period with their trademark midfield composure. For long stretches it looked as though Croatia would manage the game to a comfortable conclusion.
Ghana, however, refused to go quietly. Derrick Luckassen levelled in the 73rd minute, a goal that injected fresh belief into the Ghanaian ranks and threatened to derail Croatia's evening. Suddenly a routine win had become a genuine contest, with the African side sensing an opportunity.
Croatia's response was the mark of a seasoned tournament team. Rather than panic, they regrouped and went in search of a winner — and found it through Nikola Vlašić in the 83rd minute. The midfielder's strike restored Croatia's lead and proved decisive, settling the contest in the closing stages.
For Croatia, it is a victory built on character as much as quality, the kind of result that has so often underpinned their deep tournament runs. Their ability to absorb a setback and still find a way to win bodes well for the challenges ahead.
For Ghana, there is pride in the fight but frustration at the outcome. Their equaliser hinted at a famous point, but Croatia's experience ultimately told.
