Ivory Coast 1–0 Ecuador — World Cup 2026 Group E Match Report

Simon Adingra's 52nd-minute strike — deflected but decisive — gave Ivory Coast a hard-fought 1–0 Group E win over Ecuador at NRG Stadium in Houston. A tight match settled by a single moment of quality.

In a group containing the tournament's largest winning margin — Germany's 7–1 demolition of Curaçao earlier the same day — Ivory Coast and Ecuador offered something entirely different at NRG Stadium in Houston: a tense, physical, tactical contest decided by a single moment of quality. Simon Adingra's 52nd-minute strike gave the Elephants a deserved 1–0 Group E win over La Tri.

Ecuador came into the match with genuine credentials. Their young forward line, built around the pace and directness of Gonzalo Plata, caused problems throughout the first half. Plata's movement behind Ivory Coast's defensive line was a constant concern, and twice in the opening 40 minutes he found space in dangerous areas only to be denied by goalkeeper Yahia Fofana's smart positioning.

Ivory Coast's own attacking intent was driven by the link-up play of Sébastien Haller and the wing play of Simon Adingra. Haller — whose recovery from serious illness to become one of Africa's most lethal strikers is one of football's great comeback stories — held the ball up with excellent physicality and distributed intelligently to the runners around him.

The decisive goal arrived seven minutes into the second half. Adingra received the ball on the left flank, cut inside onto his right foot, and struck a controlled shot that deflected off an Ecuadorian defender's knee and wrong-footed the goalkeeper. The ball was in the net, and Ivory Coast led.

Ecuador threw everything forward in the final half-hour. La Tri had the ball in the net in the 77th minute when Jeremy Sarmiento's effort was rightly ruled out for offside. Their most dangerous moment came from Enner Valencia — Ecuador's all-time leading goalscorer — who struck the crossbar from 25 metres in the 84th minute. The woodwork was all that stood between Ecuador and a share of the points.

Ivory Coast held on. Three points. A clean sheet. And Group E, shaped around Germany's extraordinary opening performance, now has three closely matched sides beneath the European giants fighting for the second qualification place.

The Elephants will know that facing Germany next will be a much more demanding examination. But after the professionalism shown here, confidence in the Ivory Coast camp will be high.
