New ZealandIran 2–2 New Zealand — World Cup 2026 Group G Match Report
One of the matches of the tournament: Iran came back from 2–0 down with 20 minutes remaining to snatch a 2–2 draw through Mehdi Taremi and a stunning Sardar Azmoun volley in Philadelphia.
Football has a unique capacity to make the impossible feel inevitable in retrospect. Iran's 2–2 draw with New Zealand at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia was one of those matches: a contest that appeared entirely settled with 20 minutes remaining, only for it to produce a comeback of pure drama that had the crowd on their feet and left both sets of players collapsed on the turf at the final whistle.
Chris Wood's double had put New Zealand 2–0 ahead in the 68th minute. The match was seemingly over. Then Mehdi Taremi scored. Then Sardar Azmoun struck one of the goals of the tournament.
New Zealand — the All Whites — came into Group G as significant outsiders, but Chris Wood is not an outsider-level striker. The Nottingham Forest frontman, New Zealand's all-time leading goalscorer, has spent three seasons proving himself in the Premier League against the very best defences in Europe, and he brought every ounce of that experience to this match.
Iran's defensive line was deep and organised — a compact 4–4–2 block that denied New Zealand space in central areas. But Wood's physicality and movement in behind the centre-backs caused persistent problems, drawing fouls in dangerous areas and occupying defenders throughout.
New Zealand's first goal came in the 55th minute — Wood arriving at a corner to head home at the far post, his 38th international goal. Iran were rattled. The second followed in the 68th minute: a rapid New Zealand transition, a low cross from the right, and Wood tapping in at the near post. 2–0. Lincoln Financial Field buzzed with something no one had quite expected.
Iran refused to accept it. Mehdi Taremi — one of Europe's most technically gifted forwards and chronically underrated outside of football circles — pulled one back in the 75th minute with a curled finish from the edge of the area. Suddenly the stadium was alive again.
The equaliser came in the 88th minute and it was extraordinary. A long ball was flicked on by a substitute striker; Azmoun brought it down on his chest, turned his marker with a sharp spin, and volleyed a half-volley of stunning technique into the top corner. The Iranian fans inside the stadium erupted. 2–2.
Two minutes of added time followed, with both sides trying to steal a winner. Neither did. Both teams left the field having given everything.
In a Group G that already had Belgium drawing with Egypt, this result guarantees that all four teams go into their remaining matches with everything still to play for. World Cup 2026 is delivering.
