Canada 1–1 Bosnia & Herzegovina — World Cup 2026 Group B Match Report

Jonathan David put Canada ahead in front of a sold-out BC Place, but Edin Džeko's composed equaliser earned Bosnia & Herzegovina a hard-fought point in a pulsating Group B opener.

In front of a sold-out, deafening BC Place in Vancouver, Canada were held to a 1–1 draw by Bosnia & Herzegovina in their World Cup 2026 Group B opener — a result that leaves the host nation knowing they must be sharper in front of goal if they want to reach the knockout round.

The atmosphere before kick-off was extraordinary. More than 54,000 fans, many wrapped in the red maple leaf, created a wall of noise that gave Canada a genuine home advantage from the first whistle. Canada — one of three host nations in 2026 alongside the United States and Mexico — carried the expectations of an entire nation into this match.

Canada began with energy and intent. Alphonso Davies, operating as an advanced left winger, tormented Bosnia & Herzegovina's right flank from the opening minutes. His pace was frightening; his directness gave Bosnia's defence no time to settle. In the 23rd minute, Davies whipped a cross to the far post that found Jonathan David arriving at pace, and the Lille striker guided a calm header into the net. BC Place erupted.

Bosnia & Herzegovina regrouped. Their approach was physical — winning second balls, disrupting Canada's rhythm, and gradually growing into the match. Their midfield worked hard to deny Davies space. Slowly, Bosnia began to impose themselves.

The equaliser came in the 61st minute and it was a goal of real quality. Edin Džeko — the veteran striker who came on as a substitute — controlled a cross-field pass with his chest, took one touch to set the ball, and finished low into the corner with the composure of a man who has scored over 100 international goals. 1–1, and BC Place fell quiet.

Canada pushed hard for a winner. Davies created several promising openings from the left in the final 25 minutes, and Jonathan David had a chance to add a second that he struck straight at the goalkeeper. Bosnia's defensive shape held firm.

For Canada, this is a point dropped at home in front of the most passionate crowd they have ever played in front of. The quality is clearly there — but the clinical edge must follow. Group B also contains Qatar and Switzerland, and three points from their next two matches are now essential.
