Australia 2–0 Türkiye — World Cup 2026 Group D Match Report

Mathew Leckie and Mitchell Duke goals gave Australia a composed and clinical 2–0 Group D win over Türkiye at AT&T Stadium in Dallas. The Socceroos continue where Qatar 2022 left off.

Australia delivered a composed and clinical World Cup 2026 Group D victory over Türkiye at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, winning 2–0 with a performance that announced the Socceroos as genuine knockout round contenders and continued the momentum of their remarkable Qatar 2022 quarter-final run.

Australia came into this World Cup with genuine belief. Their squad — blending experienced European-based professionals with emerging talent — is one of the most cohesive in the AFC region, and it showed from the first whistle in Texas. Compact in their defensive shape, dangerous on the counter-attack, and tactically disciplined throughout, the Socceroos executed their gameplan with the efficiency of a side that has spent months preparing for exactly this kind of match.

Türkiye, backed by one of the most passionate fan bases in the tournament, started brightly. Arda Güler — Real Madrid's gifted attacking midfielder, already one of the most celebrated young players in the world — caused problems in the early stages with his sharp movement and ability to receive the ball between the lines. Hakan Çalhanŏglu directed play from deep with his usual authority, and for the first 20 minutes Türkiye looked like the more technically accomplished side.

But the match was not decided by possession statistics. It was Mathew Leckie who struck first — the veteran winger whose famous goal knocked Denmark out of Qatar 2022. Cutting inside from the right channel in the 27th minute, Leckie manufactured a yard of space and drilled a low shot across the Türkiye goalkeeper into the far corner.

Türkiye pressed for an equaliser after the interval, bringing on additional attacking options and committing men forward. The space left in behind was exactly what Australia's counter-attacking threat needed. A rapid break in the 68th minute sent Jackson Irvine surging through midfield; his low cross found Mitchell Duke arriving at the penalty spot, and Duke's composed finish made it 2–0.

Türkiye had chances — Yusuf Yazıcı forced a good save, and Güler struck the post with a curling effort in the 83rd minute — but Australia defended the lead with the same discipline that made them so difficult to break down in Qatar.

Group D, which also contains the United States and Paraguay, is now tilted firmly in Australia's favour. The Socceroos believe. After watching this performance, so do a lot of neutrals.
