IraqSenegal Run Riot in 5–0 Demolition of Iraq in Toronto
Pape Gueye scored twice as Senegal produced their most emphatic display of the group stage, demolishing Iraq 5–0 to surge into the knockout rounds.
Senegal saved their most emphatic performance of the group stage for last, dismantling Iraq 5–0 at BMO Field in Toronto to surge into the knockout rounds with a statement of intent.
The rout began early. Habib Diarra struck in the fourth minute to settle any nerves, and although Iraq held firm for much of the first half, the second period belonged entirely to the Senegalese. Ismaïla Sarr made it 2–0 in the 56th minute, and from there the floodgates opened.
Pape Gueye took centre stage with a quickfire double, scoring in the 59th and 72nd minutes to turn a comfortable evening into a procession. Iliman Ndiaye completed the scoring in the 82nd minute, capping a display of ruthless, incisive attacking football that will have caught the attention of every side still in the tournament.
For Senegal, it is the kind of result that builds belief and momentum at exactly the right moment. The Lions of Teranga have long possessed the talent to trouble anyone; on this evidence, they now have the cutting edge to match. Relentless movement and a clinical touch in front of goal — this was Senegal at their formidable best.
For Iraq, it is a sobering end to a campaign that promised more. Overrun once Senegal found their rhythm, they were unable to live with the pace and quality of one of Africa's strongest sides. There will be lessons to take, but little to soften the disappointment of such a heavy defeat.
