Mokoena Penalty Earns South Africa a Point Against Czechia

Sadílek’s early goal looked set to win it for Czechia until a late Teboho Mokoena penalty rescued a 1–1 draw for South Africa in a tense World Cup 2026 Group A clash in Atlanta.

South Africa dug deep to earn a 1–1 draw against Czechia at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, a late Teboho Mokoena penalty cancelling out Sadílek's early strike in a Group A encounter that kept both nations' qualification hopes alive.

Czechia Strike First

Czechia made the brighter start and were rewarded inside six minutes when Sadílek fired them in front. The early goal gave the Czechs control, and for long periods they looked the more composed side, managing the tempo and keeping South Africa at arm's length.

Bafana Bafana, however, are nothing if not resilient. They grew into the contest as the game wore on, pressing higher and forcing Czechia onto the back foot in search of an equaliser that would keep their tournament alive.

Mokoena's Decisive Moment

That equaliser arrived in the 83rd minute, and from the penalty spot. Teboho Mokoena — one of South Africa's most reliable performers — stepped up and converted with the composure the moment demanded, sending the South African supporters in Atlanta into raptures and snatching a precious point.

Czechia pushed for a winner in the closing minutes but could not find a way through, and the spoils were shared.

What It Means

In a tight Group A — with host nation Mexico setting the pace — every point matters, and both teams will feel this is a result they can build on. For South Africa, the manner of the draw, fighting back late against an organised European side, will breed confidence. For Czechia, dropping two points from a winning position will sting, but a point on the road is far from a disaster.

The group remains finely poised heading into the final round of fixtures, with qualification still in the balance for several sides.
