UruguayDebutants Cape Verde Earn a Famous 2–2 Draw With Uruguay
In one of the stories of the tournament, World Cup debutants Cape Verde twice found a way back to hold two-time champions Uruguay to a 2–2 draw, with Lenini and Varela the heroes.
It was the kind of result that makes the World Cup magical. Cape Verde, a tiny island nation playing in their first-ever World Cup, refused to be overawed by two-time champions Uruguay and earned a thoroughly deserved 2–2 draw — a historic first World Cup point that will be celebrated across the archipelago for years to come.
The Blue Sharks Strike First
Cape Verde stunned La Celeste by taking the lead in the 21st minute through Lenini, whose finish sent the underdogs ahead and announced their arrival on the global stage. Far from sitting back, the debutants played with belief and organisation that belied their inexperience.
Uruguay Hit Back Before the Break
Class told as the first half drew to a close. In the 44th minute, Araujo levelled for Uruguay, and almost immediately, on the stroke of half-time, Canobbio turned the game around — finishing from an Araujo assist to give Uruguay a 2–1 lead at the interval. It looked, at that point, as though experience would win out.
Varela Restores Parity
But Cape Verde had more to give. In the 61st minute, Varela rose to the occasion and restored parity at 2–2, sparking jubilant scenes. The Blue Sharks saw out the closing stages with discipline and heart to secure a point that means everything to them.
What It Means
For Cape Verde, a draw with a footballing giant is a triumph and a landmark moment in their history. For Uruguay, it is a wake-up call — two points dropped against opposition they would have expected to beat. In the expanded format, every point matters, and this was one of the great World Cup upsets-in-spirit. Follow every World Cup 2026 match live on KickD.
