How the AFC Champions League Elite works

Asia's premier club competition carries the "Elite" name after the confederation restructured its club game, narrowing the top tier to a smaller field of the continent's strongest sides.

Its defining feature is geographic. The league phase is split into a West region and an East region, so clubs travel within their half of the continent rather than across a confederation that stretches from Australia to Lebanon. For a competition spanning that many time zones, the split is a practical necessity rather than a sporting one — and it means Arab clubs mostly face each other, plus Iranian and Central Asian opposition, until the later rounds.

Where the Arab clubs sit

The West region is the Arab half of Asian football. Saudi, Qatari, Emirati and Iraqi clubs make up much of the field, and the competition is where their domestic spending gets measured against real opposition.

Al Hilal are the most successful club in the history of Asian club football, and Al Ain's title in 2024 confirmed that the Gulf's continental record is not a single-club story. For a Saudi or Emirati side, this is the trophy that means more than the league — the domestic title proves you are the best at home, this proves you are the best in Asia.

What to watch

Squad depth decides more ties here than anywhere else in Asian football. Clubs are balancing a congested domestic season against continental travel measured in thousands of kilometres, and the sides that survive are usually the ones that can rotate without dropping their level.
