**Miroslav Klose (Germany) — 16 goals.** Across four tournaments from 2002 to 2014, Klose overtook Ronaldo to become the World Cup's all-time leading scorer, fittingly lifting the trophy in his final tournament.

**Ronaldo (Brazil) — 15 goals.** The original Ronaldo led Brazil to the 2002 title and held the record for almost a decade.

**Gerd Müller (West Germany) — 14 goals.** Scored all 14 across just two tournaments (1970 and 1974), an astonishing strike rate.

**Just Fontaine (France) — 13 goals.** Remarkably, Fontaine scored all 13 at a single tournament in 1958 — a single-edition record that still stands and may never be broken.

**Lionel Messi (Argentina) — 13 goals.** After his match-winning 2022 campaign, Messi joined Fontaine on 13.

**Pelé (Brazil) — 12 goals.** The three-time champion remains one of the tournament's defining figures.

Just Fontaine's 13 goals in 1958 is one of the oldest and most secure records in football. In the modern game, no player has come close — the Golden Boot is now typically won with six to eight goals. Harry Kane led Russia 2018 with six; Kylian Mbappé won the 2022 Golden Boot with eight, including a hat-trick in the final.
