4 — Argentine escapes beyond the 90th minute

Every single Argentina knockout tie before the final was decided in the last minutes or extra time: Cape Verde (a.e.t.), Egypt (winner at 90+2), Switzerland (a.e.t.), England (winner at 90+2). No defending champion had ever walked that tightrope four rounds in a row — until the final, when the fifth escape never came.

The most ever: Morocco, Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Jordan and Qatar. Three reached the knockout rounds; Morocco went furthest, to a quarter-final against France; Egypt fell two minutes short of eliminating the eventual finalists.
