Spain 3–0 Austria: Oyarzabal Double Sends the European Champions Cruising Into the Round of 16

Mikel Oyarzabal scored twice — both created by Marc Cucurella — and Pedro Porro added the second as Spain beat Austria 3–0 in the Round of 32.

Spain remain the tournament's quiet inevitability. The European champions dismissed Austria 3–0 in the Round of 32 with a performance of suffocating control and clinical timing, Mikel Oyarzabal scoring either side of Pedro Porro's strike to set up a blockbuster all-Iberian Round of 16 meeting with Portugal.

Austria arrived with credentials — group-stage conquerors of Jordan, authors of that unforgettable 3–3 with Algeria, and unlucky against Argentina — but they spent the evening chasing a white shirt that would not surrender the ball. The pattern was set early and never changed: Spain passed, probed and waited.

Oyarzabal and Cucurella, Twice

The opener arrived in the 36th minute and was built down the left, Marc Cucurella delivering for Oyarzabal to finish — a combination that would bookend the night. Austria made a double change at the break and briefly found more bite, but the second goal, in the 66th minute, restored the natural order: Álex Baena, Spain's match-winner against Uruguay in the group stage, created for Pedro Porro to convert.

The third was the first move in replay. In the 89th minute Cucurella again found Oyarzabal, and the striker — who scored twice in the 4–0 dismantling of Saudi Arabia — completed his second double of the tournament. Stefan Posch's late booking was as close as Austria came to leaving a mark on the contest.

What It Means

Spain have now gone through four matches at this World Cup without conceding, and in Oyarzabal they possess the coldest finisher of the tournament's opening month. Austria depart having illuminated the group stage — Marko Arnautović and that Algeria epic will be remembered — but this was a level beyond them.

The champions of Europe glide on, and the rest of the bracket has been warned.
