Jordan 1–2 Algeria: Gouiri Caps the Comeback in Santa Clara

Jordan led through Al-Rashdan but Algeria fought back through Benbouali and Amine Gouiri to win 2–1 on a proud, painful night for the World Cup debutants.

Jordan's first World Cup continued to deliver drama and heartbreak in equal measure as the Nashama led against Algeria before falling to a 2–1 defeat at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, a result that leaves their qualification hopes hanging by a thread.

Roared on by a passionate, colourful travelling support that has become one of the stories of the tournament, Jordan played without fear. They took a deserved lead on 36 minutes through Al-Rashdan, who finished a move created by their talisman Mousa Al-Tamari, and for long stretches looked every bit the equal of more storied opponents. For a debutant nation daring to dream, the sight of that lead was the stuff of history.

Algeria Turn It Around

But Algeria, with the vast experience of Riyad Mahrez to call upon, grew into the contest after the break and gradually tilted it. The equaliser arrived on 69 minutes, Benbouali converting Mahrez's pass, and the turnaround was complete on 82 minutes when Amine Gouiri struck what proved to be the winner — the decisive intervention of a side that knew how to manage the big moments.

Jordan pushed for a leveller in the closing stages, throwing players forward and refusing to surrender the belief that had carried them this far, but they could not find a second goal. Their resistance was ultimately undone by Algerian quality at the sharpest end of the pitch.

A Tournament to Remember Regardless

Even in defeat, the Nashama have given their country and the wider Arab world a campaign to cherish. Al-Tamari has announced himself on the global stage, the support has been magnificent, and a generation of Jordanian players has shown it belongs. Whatever the final outcome, this maiden World Cup has already changed the story of football in the country.

Group J Picture

The defeat leaves Jordan pointless after two matches and on the brink of elimination — though their fans have already made this debut World Cup unforgettable. Algeria move to three points and back into contention behind leaders Argentina.
