The Greatest World Cup Upsets in History: From Belo Horizonte to Qatar

World Cup upsets are the moments that define tournaments and stick in the memory for decades. From the USA beating England in 1950 to Saudi Arabia stunning Argentina in 2022 — here are the shocks that changed football history.

The greatest thing about the FIFA World Cup is that anything can happen. On a single afternoon, a nation of five million can defeat a country with a hundred times the population. A team who have never previously scored a World Cup goal can eliminate the defending champions. The tournament's history is littered with moments of pure shock — upsets that caused billions of viewers to question everything they thought they knew about football.

Here are the defining moments of World Cup upset history, from the earliest days of the tournament to the modern era.

USA 1–0 England, 1950: The Miracle of Belo Horizonte

If you were to design a World Cup upset from scratch, you might invent this one. England — appearing in their first World Cup, regarded at the time as inventors and true masters of the game — faced the United States in the 1950 World Cup group stage in Brazil. The Americans were amateur players, many of whom held day jobs. England were expected to win easily.

Joe Gaetjens scored the only goal on 37 minutes. England pressed, created chances, and could not score. The final result — USA 1, England 0 — was so shocking that several newspapers initially assumed the score had been transmitted incorrectly and printed the result as 10-1 to England. It remains one of the greatest results in World Cup history.

West Germany 3–2 Hungary, 1954: The Miracle of Bern

Hungary entered the 1954 World Cup as the greatest team on earth. They had not lost a match in four years and had humiliated England 6-3 at Wembley. They beat West Germany 8-3 in the group stage. In the final, they led 2-0 after eight minutes.

West Germany came back to win 3-2. The Hungarian Golden Team, led by the legendary Ferenc Puskás, never won a World Cup. West Germany, supposedly massively inferior, lifted the trophy. It has been called the Miracle of Bern. Hungarian football never quite recovered.

Cameroon 1–0 Argentina, 1990: Italia 90 Opens With a Shock

The defending world champions Argentina opened Italia 90 against Cameroon, a team who had never previously reached the knockout stage of a World Cup. Cameroon — physical, direct, and aggressive — defeated Argentina 1-0. It was the opening match of the tournament, which meant the shock was absorbed by the entire watching world simultaneously.

Roger Milla came off the bench and became the story of the tournament, scoring four goals and dancing his way to global fame at the age of 38. Cameroon reached the quarterfinals. Argentina lost the final to West Germany.

Senegal 1–0 France, 2002: The World Champions Fall

In 2002, France were the reigning world champions and European champions simultaneously. They entered the tournament as heavy favourites to defend the title. In the opening match, Senegal — appearing in their first ever World Cup — defeated them 1-0 through Papa Bouba Diop. France were eliminated in the group stage without scoring a single goal. Senegal went on to reach the quarterfinals.

Saudi Arabia 2–1 Argentina, 2022: Messi Stunned

Perhaps the most stunning upset in recent World Cup history. Argentina, on a 36-match unbeaten run, opened their 2022 World Cup campaign against Saudi Arabia. Messi gave Argentina the lead from the penalty spot. Then Saudi Arabia scored twice in the first eight minutes of the second half, had three goals correctly ruled offside in the first half, and held on for one of the most extraordinary results in football history.

Saudi Arabia's players celebrated so wildly that the Saudi government declared a national holiday. Argentina recovered to win the tournament, but that night in Lusail — Messi stunned, the football world rewriting the record books — belongs to Saudi Arabia forever.
