Germany at World Cup 2026: Can Die Mannschaft Recapture Former Glory?

Four-time world champions Germany arrive at the 2026 FIFA World Cup hungry to end a decade of underperformance on the biggest stage. Here is what to expect from Julian Nagelsmann's rebuilt side.

Germany are one of the most decorated nations in World Cup history. Four titles — 1954, 1974, 1990, 2014 — plus four runner-up finishes and a semi-final run so consistent it defined an era. And yet, since lifting the trophy in Brazil twelve years ago, Die Mannschaft have stumbled at the very moments the world expected them to deliver. A group-stage exit in 2018 and another in 2022 — two consecutive first-round eliminations that would have been unthinkable for any previous German generation.

At the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, Germany arrive not as favourites, but as a team with something to prove. Under the guidance of Julian Nagelsmann, the youngest of the elite international managers, they have rebuilt with youth, pace, and pressing intensity. The question is whether the new Germany can deliver on the biggest stage when it counts.

A New Identity Under Nagelsmann

When Nagelsmann took over from Hansi Flick in September 2023, Germany were a team in crisis. Results were poor, performances were laboured, and the golden generation of Neuer, Müller, and Kroos looked like it was fading. Nagelsmann's first task was simple: inject energy and belief into a group that had forgotten what it felt like to win.

He did exactly that. Germany's Euro 2024 campaign — played at home in front of raucous crowds — reminded the world what German football looks like at its best. A quarterfinal exit to Spain on a golden goal was heartbreaking, but the performances throughout the tournament signalled genuine renewal. The fans fell in love with their team again.

For 2026, the core of that Euro 2024 squad returns. Jamal Musiala — still only 22 — is the player everyone in the world wants to watch. His close control, balance, and ability to find pockets of space in tight areas is extraordinary. He is capable of being the best player at the tournament. Florian Wirtz, his partner in Germany's attacking midfield, is no less dangerous. Together, they form one of the most exciting partnerships in world football.

The Defence: Solid but Tested

Germany's defensive record improved significantly under Nagelsmann. Antonio Rüdiger, the Real Madrid centre-back, provides the experience and physicality in defence. He is one of the best defenders of his generation — aggressive, commanding, and composed under pressure. Alongside him, Jonathan Tah has matured into a reliable partner.

In goal, Manuel Neuer — now in his late thirties — remains first choice, though the question of when he will be succeeded has followed German football for years. His shot-stopping ability and sweeper-keeper style remain world class. If he can stay fit throughout the tournament, Germany will have one of the best goalkeepers in the competition.

The Midfield Engine

Joshua Kimmich at right back or central midfield continues to be the engine of everything Germany do. His reading of the game, positional intelligence, and ability to dictate tempo make him irreplaceable. When Germany need to control possession and slow the game down, Kimmich does it. When they need to press and win the ball back quickly, he leads that too.

Leon Goretzka and Leroy Sané provide width, directness, and goals from midfield positions. Kai Havertz, deployed further forward, offers the pressing trigger and intelligent movement that Nagelsmann's system demands at the top of the pitch.

Can Germany Win It?

A German World Cup victory in 2026 would require navigating a knockout bracket that is likely to include Spain, Brazil, France, and Argentina on one side or another. They are capable of beating any of those teams on their day — but they need to produce over seven consecutive performances, something that has eluded them since 2014.

The optimistic case: Musiala and Wirtz are the best player in the tournament, Germany's pressing suffocates opposition, and a young squad peaks at exactly the right moment. The cautious case: the pressure of expectations again proves too heavy for a side that has not won a major tournament since the 2017 Confederations Cup.

Germany at their best are thrilling to watch. And in 2026, for the first time in a long time, their best might just be good enough.
