The Biggest Transfers in Football History

From Neymar’s record 222 million euro move to Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale — the blockbuster deals that redrew the limits of the transfer market.

Football's transfer record has been broken again and again over the decades, each blockbuster move pushing the limits of what a player can be worth. Here are some of the biggest transfers in the history of the game.

Neymar — Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain (2017)

The deal that redefined the market. PSG triggered Neymar's release clause to sign him from Barcelona for a reported 222 million euros — more than doubling the previous world record. It remains the most expensive transfer ever completed.

Kylian Mbappé — Monaco to Paris Saint-Germain (2017–18)

In the same summer, PSG added teenage sensation Kylian Mbappé from Monaco in a deal worth around 180 million euros, initially structured as a loan before becoming permanent. It made Mbappé one of the costliest players in history before he had turned 20.

Philippe Coutinho — Liverpool to Barcelona (2018)

Barcelona reinvested some of the Neymar money on Coutinho, paying Liverpool a fee that could rise to around 145 million euros — a British record sale at the time.

Cristiano Ronaldo — Manchester United to Real Madrid (2009)

A landmark of an earlier era. Real Madrid paid Manchester United around 94 million euros for Cristiano Ronaldo, a then-world-record fee that began one of the most prolific spells in the club's history.

Gareth Bale — Tottenham to Real Madrid (2013)

Four years later, Real Madrid broke the record again to sign Gareth Bale from Tottenham for a fee reported at around 100 million euros, pairing him with Ronaldo in a fearsome forward line.

The Modern Market

More recently the centre of gravity has shifted toward the Premier League, where clubs have paid British-record fees well in excess of 100 million pounds for midfielders such as Enzo Fernández and Moisés Caicedo. Saudi Arabian clubs have also entered the market aggressively, reshaping where many of the game's biggest names — and biggest salaries — now reside.
